03/18/25: Joe’s BBQ

After exploring the fun activities within Kansas City, the GLCM students were hungry. For dinner on Tuesday evening, the GLCM students enjoyed a group dinner at Joes Bar-B-Que in Kansas City. Joe’s BBQ is a piece of Kansas City history, as it was started in the early 1990s. This company is currently run by Jeff and Joy Stehney. This all started when Jeff and Joy went to a barbeque contest. They fell in love with everything about it including the smell of it, the smokiness, the camaraderie, the competition, and the passion. This caused them to buy a competition-style smoker and formed a barbeque team, named Slaughterhouse Five.

Soon after starting this competition, they began to win numerous smoking competitions. They even won the Lenexa Kansas State BBQ Championship, the American Royal Open, and the American Royal Invitational, which are extremely prestigious competitions. People enjoyed their food so much, they recommended that they create their own restaurant. They were hesitant about it at first because they knew how much risk was associated with it.  Eventually, Jeff went into business with Joe, who was the owner of Oklahoma Joe’s Smoker Company.

This business was then moved into this building, which is also a gas station. It is a multi-functional building to this day. Upon entering the building, we were greeted by this big menu.

GLCM students enjoyed a variety of options from the menu, including the half-slab of ribs with a side of mac and cheese, the Carolina pork sandwich, the 2-meat dinner, and banana pudding. Overall, the GLCM students rated this restaurant a 7/10 on average.

The banana pudding was one of the best items at the restaurant. It was a Nilla wafer base, with a delicious banana pudding mix, topped with heath bar crumbs. The GLCM students rated this dessert a 9/10 on average, as it was extremely tasty. Below is a picture of one of the students, Izak, enjoying his banana pudding.

After everyone finished eating their delicious barbeque, everyone took the 30-ish minute drive back home to Overland Park. A couple of the students went to the grocery store to get ingredients for smores. The students had a large bonfire in the backyard, while enjoying each other’s company. The GLCM students took an early night to sleep, as a big day is ahead of us.
